University of Chapel Hill School of Law and Departments of Art and Art History will host This Art Belongs to the Artists: Art as Human Rights Exhibition & Symposium on April 12, 2024, from 3 p.m. - 7 p.m. ET. The event explores the ongoing impact of state violence and the consequences of the extralegal prison at the Guantánamo Bay Detention Camp through the framework of art and law. The symposium will be in person at Hanes Art Center, 121 E. Cameron Avenue, Chapel Hill, and live-streamed via Zoom.

The program includes an exhibition of art created by men imprisoned at Guantánamo, followed by symposium speakers, including the virtual participation of several released detainee artists. Speakers will address the sovereign, political, and legal dimensions of detainee art, comment on the interrelated international law issues and the paradox within claims to human rights with a focus on art and the rights of detainees to own and control their creative work.  

Center for Constitutional Rights Advocacy Program Manager Aliya Hana Hussain will join the symposium’s concluding panel, “Social Action, Law and Art.”
