CCR clients Djamel Ameziane and Ghaleb Al-Bihani will show select pieces of artwork at the upcoming exhibit, Ode to the Sea: Art from Guantánamo Bay, which will run from October 2 through January 26.
The exhibit displays over thirty works, including drawings, paintings, and three-dimensional works crafted from the few materials permitted to detainees, including model ships made from parts of shirts, prayer caps, razors, and mops. As former detainee Mansoor Adayfi explains in an essay written for the exhibition catalog, and published in the New York Times, “In Our Prison on the Sea,” the theme of the show was chosen because the sea “means freedom that no one can control or own, freedom for everyone.”
The gallery is located on the 6th Floor Haaren Hall, and will be open Monday through Friday 9-5PM, or by appointment. You can find out more information on the exhibit website.
CCR will be hosting a discussion and closing reception on Monday, January 22 at the Shiva Gallery, John Jay College. RSVP here.
