The People’s Academy of International Law, sponsored by the International Association of Democratic Lawyers and co-sponsored by the Center for Constitutional Rights, seeks to help progressive and anti-imperialist lawyers and human rights defenders globally to marshal the tools of international law to support people’s struggles. It features a free, online continuing legal education (CLE) curriculum that provides intensive learning about different facets of international law as it relates to human rights, including civil and political rights, and economic, social, and cultural rights.

Faculty include Richard Falk, former UN special rapporteur on occupied Palestinian territories; Inder Comar, who sued George W. Bush in U.S. federal court for the illegality of the Iraq war; Sujith Xavier, University of Windsor Associate Professor; and Roberto Zamora, who filed a successful lawsuit in Costa Rica for the illegality of the Iraq war.

The course will cover the UN organs and their respective roles and competencies; main subsidiary organs and specialized agencies; human rights and peoples’ rights; regional systems (Inter-American, European, African); international law of armed conflict (“International Humanitarian Law”) and refugee law; international crimes, repression, and the fight against impunity; liberation and emancipation struggles and international law; the crisis of international law; and the crisis of the world capitalist system.

Course materials and education will be in English and Spanish and potentially other languages.
