Bolivia's ex-leader to compensate massacre victims in landmark U.S. case

...Former Bolivian president Gonzalo Sánchez de Lozada and his defense minister, Jose Carlos Sánchez Berzain, on Thursday agreed to drop their appeals in a civil case where a jury found them responsible for civilian casualties in a military crackdown that left 58 people dead and hundreds injured.

The former president and former minister of defense will pay an undisclosed sum in compensatory damages to the family of eight people killed during the unrest, according to the Center for Constitutional Rights, which represents the victims’ families.

“It’s been a long and difficult road but I have always said, sooner or later, justice comes,” Rojas Mamani said in an interview from La Paz. “We are very happy that I can finally deliver the promise I made to my daughter. And I want to tell the Bolivian people and others around the world, that our governments, no matter who they are, do not have the right to massacre their own people.” ...
