Law4BlackLives (L4BL) is launching an online training series to support our national community of lawyers and legal advocates in their efforts to serve the Movement for Black Lives and the broader constellation of community groups building a transformative racial justice movement. We know that the legal profession was not created to support social movements. To put our legal skills to the service of the movement, it takes creativity, radical analysis, modesty, and the ability to listen to those on the frontlines and follow their lead. This training series will help us develop those abilities in order to be effective partners in this struggle.

In this moment of resistance and struggle, it’s more important than ever to push back on the forces caging and criminalizing our communities. It is time for those of us who have held the privilege of legal knowledge to not just help others, but to give our clients and comrades the tools to defend themselves.

This training focuses on 10 of the most commonly prosecuted crimes and explores simple, digestible ways advocates can help community members defend themselves through a combination of court advocacy, community organizing, and political education. We will discuss not only on legal defense skills but also political ways of interacting with legal processes and how to disseminate resources to those that wish to use them.

Led by two experienced and radical criminal defense lawyers of color, this training will leave you with a clearer vision about how you can grow community criminal defense structures in your local community. Non-lawyers are welcome and encouraged to attend this training.
