Over the last several years, we have seen federal, state, and local policies that encourage an aggressive coordination between law enforcement agencies and immigration officials. This has resulted in strained relationships between law enforcement and the immigrant communities they are sworn to serve and protect. It has resulted in less safe communities because immigrants – both legal and undocumented - are afraid to contact the police for fear of being reported to immigration authorities or deported.

 

The event will include role-plays, and a discussion about some of the local enforcement efforts that fall under the umbrella of “Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Access” programs, including the so-called “Secure Communities” program.  There will also be a discussion about the recently passed Arizona law and the status of the law in New Jersey.
