Panel Discussion on Private Military Contractors and the Fight for Accountability
Date: Monday, March 19, 2012
Time: 11:45 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Where: University of Virginia School of Law
Room: WB 102

The U.S. Government has contracted private military contractors at an unprecedented rate for services ranging from security escorts for government officials to intelligence gathering and analysis to logistical support. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have been the most contracted out wars in United States history with contractors remaining in Iraq after the end of war has been declared and U.S. military withdrawn. Despite rampant human rights abuses, the DOJ has failed to prosecute many serious offenses.

The panel will offer a comprehensive look at the use of private military including an examination of specific cases brought against contractors for human rights violations. Panelists will present both domestic and international legal mechanisms in the fight for accountability.

Speakers: Katherine Gallagher, CCR senior staff attorney; Gabor Rona, International Legal Director at Human Rights First; moderated by Deena R. Hurwitz, Director, International Human Rights Law Clinic and Human Rights Program at University of Virginia School of Law;
