Since 2002, at least 775 men have been held in the U.S. detention center at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. According to Department of Defense data, fewer than half of them are accused of committing any hostile act against the United States or its allies. In hundreds of cases, even the circumstances of their initial detainment are questionable. Many of the detainees have turned to writing poetry as a way to preserve their humanity even through the abuse and isolation they face.

Professor Marc Falkoff acts as a legal counsel to 17 Yemeni prisoners at the Guantanamo Bay Detention Facility and was one of the first US citizens to visit the camp. He will speak from his first-hand experience about the ongoing human rights violations occurring within the prison, as well as read selections of poetry written by the prisoners that are compiled in his book, Poems from Guantanamo: The Detainees Speak, published 2007.
