An outgrowth of the Body Politic intensive laboratory that piloted at Gibney Dance summer 2018, this interactive program features live dance and audience discussion that poses the questions: How can dance be a valuable part of social change? How is movement activism part of the frontier of dance? And why does society need the extraordinary skills of dancers more than ever right now?

Guest curated by choreographer and Body Politic founder Jill Sigman, the program includes new work by artist-activists affiliated with the Body Politic program: Joya Powell, Stacy Lynn Smith and Dani Cole, and an excerpt from Sigman’s This is where we are., which grew out of the movement process used in the Body Politic program. The choreographers presented here work to forge connections between their somatic selves and social engagement in unique ways and offer a portrait of the evolving faces of art and activism.

They will be joined in discussion by Pardiss Kebriaei, Senior Staff Attorney at the Center for Constitutional Rights.

A book signing follows the event.
