Join us in court! Oral Argument in Scott v. PA Board of Probation and Parole in Pittsburgh, PA

On Wednesday, April 13, at 9:30 a.m. the Pennsylvania Supreme Court will travel to Pittsburgh to hear our oral argument in Scott v. Pennsylvania Board of Probation and Parole. After the lower courts ruled earlier last year that our clients are not allowed to challenge their lifetime ban on parole, citing lack of jurisdiction, we are urging the higher court to reverse this decision and give our plaintiffs, Marie, Marsha, Normita, and Tyree, who’ve spent decades in prison, a chance to hear their case.

Please join the Abolitionist Law Center, Amistad Law Project, the Center for Constitutional Rights, impacted community members, and prison abolitionists next Wednesday at the Pittsburgh City-County Building (414 Grant Street) to pack the courtroom in the name of redemption and liberation. Let’s show the Pennsylvania Supreme Court that the over 1,1000 people sentenced under “felony murder” in the state deserve a chance at parole eligibility. A chance to finally come home.

If you cannot join in person, join virtually on the Supreme Court of PA’s YouTube page.

This Thursday! “Immigration Detention and Resistance”

Join the National Lawyers Guild Thursday, April 14 from 12:45 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. to discuss “Cruel by Design: Voices of Resistance From Immigration Detention,” a comprehensive report we published with the the Immigrant Defense Project that highlights the immigration system as a structure of oppression, the cruel and inhumane conditions at ICE facilities, and the individuals who have survived and resisted. This event will feature attorney and Bertha Justice Fellow Samah Sisay as well as Joaris Hernandez, an immigrant rights activist. Other first-hand accounts from individuals previously detained by ICE will also be shared.

Join the event over Zoom.

Sufyian Barhoumi was sent home to Algeria, nearly twenty years after arriving at Guantánamo

Earlier this month, Sufyian Barhoumi was sent home to Algeria, nearly twenty years after arriving at Guantánamo.

When describing when he learned he was actually going home, Mr. Barhoumi said, “And at that moment, I saw my mother in the room in front of me, and I couldn’t stop crying.”

In 2008, the U.S. government charged Mr. Barhoumi, but it soon dropped all charges without explanation. Yet he spent four years awaiting formal clearance and then another six waiting for transfer back home to his aging mother. You can read more in our press release on our website and in this story in The New York Times.
