Violence Against Women in the Medical Setting: An Examination of The U.S. Foster System

Group Submission to the UN Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women

On May 31, 2019, Movement for Family Power, National Advocates for Pregnant Women, and other organizations, including the Center for Constitutional Rights, wrote in response to the call by the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women, Ms. Dubravka Šimonović, for information on mistreatment and violence against women during reproductive health care and facility-based childbirth.

Our joint written submission examines the foster system in the United States. The submission discusses the targeting, with the aid of medical care providers, of poor women and women of color who are pregnant or have recently given birth for child maltreatment investigations, intensive state surveillance and control, and forced family separation.
