When You’re Called a Terrorist: How Domestic Terrorism Laws Target Protestors and Activists

Join the Center for Constitutional Rights, NDN Collective, Community Movement Builders, and the Jerusalem Fund for a panel discussion exploring how domestic terrorism laws target anyone challenging police violence, environmental degradation, and militarism. This panel will be in person at the Netroots Nation conference in Chicago and will be livestreamed on Saturday, July 15, at 2:45 p.m. CT / 3:45 p.m. ET.

In January 2023, 19 climate justice activists in Atlanta were charged with domestic terrorism and other crimes for their protests against Cop City. Meanwhile, the Israeli government has designated human rights organizations as “terrorists” and justifies its crackdown on Palestinian protesters as combating terrorism. These trends threaten our movement work to build a better and more equitable world. Today, the “domestic terrorism” label is wielded against communities of color, even though the laws were pushed through to ostensibly quell white supremacist violence.

Adalah Justice Project Director Sandra Tamari will moderate the panel. Speakers include Center for Constitutional Rights Senior Staff Attorney Diala Shamas, Community Movement Builders, Inc founder Kamau Franklin, NDN Collective President and CEO Nick Tilsen, and Jerusalem Project Executive Director Jehad Abusalim.
