Center for Constitutional Rights Testimony on 50-a for NY Senate Codes Committee

Organizational testimony in support of repealing CRL 50-a

On October 24, 2019, Center for Constitutional Rights Bertha Justice Fellow Lupe Aguirre delivered testimony before the New York State Senate Codes Committee, calling on the state legislature to repeal CRL 50-a.

The Center for Constitutional Rights submitted our written testimony in support of S.3695, an act which would repeal Section 50-a of the New York Civil Rights Law. As we noted in our written testimony, 50-a undermines important and long- lasting policies of open government, government accountability, and the commitment to protecting the rights of vulnerable and marginalized communities. It is no secret that the crucial need for police accountability remains in New York and nationally. By repealing 50-a, New York will take in important step toward increasing police accountability, public safety, and justice.
