* Charlotte Lynne Kates: Charlotte is the Education and Outreach organizer at the Centre for Constitutional Rights in New York City on its project representing Guantanamo Detainees. She is an attorney who graduated from Rutgers School of Law, and is also the Co-Chair of the Middle East Subcommittee of the National Lawyers Guild and a long time activist with New Jersey Solidarity Activists for the Liberation of Palestine and Al-Awda The Palestine Right to Return Coalition.

* Jon Elmer: Jon is a freelance writer and journalist specializing in the Middle East and Canadian foreign policy. He has been a correspondent for Inter Press Service news agency and is currently co-authoring a book on Canadian involvement in Afghanistan. He has also heavily researched and reported from the West Bank and Gaza Strip from 2003-2007.

Since 2001, US, Canadian and NATO forces have occupied Afghanistan in the name of the War On Terror, killing and displacing thousands of Afghanis in one of the world's largest humanitarian crises. In 2002, in part to facilitate the occupation of Afghanistan and also of Iraq, the US detainee camp Guantanamo Bay was opened up on US controlled territory in Cuba. The Canadian government has refused to speak out against the illegal detention and torture of Guantanamo detainees including of Canadian-born juvenile Omar Khadr.

Seven years on, election campaigns are in full swing in the United States and Canada with much rhetoric of 'change'. However in both the US and Canada, Guantanamo is taboo and all major parties are silent on full troop withdrawals from the Middle East. Regardless of the election outcome, little will change for the millions of victims of the so-called War on Terror, led by the governments of the US, Canada, and their allies.

Everyone is welcome to this event, for an urgently needed update and discussion on US and Canadian roles on the War on Terror, from Guantanamo to Afghanistan.
