Location

Join us on Wednesday, October 9th at 1:00 pm for an important hearing on the use of solitary confinement in California prisons before the California Assembly Public Safety Committee in Sacramento. Rallies will be held before and after the hearing, at 11:30 am and 4:00 pm.

This past summer, prisoners conducted a sixty day hunger strike to protest the inhumane conditions and brutal long-term confinement within California’s Secure Housing Units (SHUs). Their courage and determination garnered international support and widespread media coverage.

The California Assembly Public Safety Committee announced it will hold an initial hearing to investigate solitary confinement and human rights abuses in California prisons. Former prisoners, family members, lawyers, experts and advocates will attend the rally and testify before the Committee.

CCR applauds the hunger strikers for their bravery in demanding their rights be upheld and their dignity respected. Until prolonged solitary confinement is abolished once and for all, CCR will remain vigilant and stand in solidarity with the prisoners to demand justice, including our legal challenge on behalf of prisoners at Pelican Bay State Prison who have decades in the SHUs.
