Join the Center for Constitutional Rights and The Drawing Center for a Human Rights Day breakfast and private tour of the exhibition The Pencil Is a Key: Drawings by Incarcerated Artists led by co-curator Isabella Kapur.

Center for Constitutional Rights Advocacy Program Manager Aliya Hussain will offer background on the history of art at Guantánamo and the conditions and political climate under which Djamel Ameziane and the other artists featured in the exhibition created their work. Julie Azuma and Mike Ishii will give context to art-making by Japanese-American artists imprisoned in internment camps during WWII and the work of Mine Okubo.

The drawings featured in this exhibition present powerful evidence of the persistence of human creativity in the most inhuman of circumstances and argue for the necessity of art to the life of every human being.

Breakfast will be served. Kindly RSVP.
