The recent spike in Islamophobia, triggered by the tragic events of Paris and San Bernardino and the vitriol of an election cycle, continues to take a significant toll on Muslim communities. Such invective and fear not only motivates hate crimes nationwide, but also relates to certain government abuses in the domestic "war on terror."

In our January vigil, we will discuss how Islamophobia manifests itself in the context of US law enforcement practices, including those leading to domestic terror prosecutions. As we mark the 14th anniversary of Guantánamo’s opening on January 11, we will also discuss the Obama administration’s reported plan to “close” Guantánamo by transferring a number of detainees to prison in the U.S. We will also hear updates from the January 6 hearing in the Fort Dix 5 case, the focus of last month’s vigil. 

Directions to Vigil: The closest subway to the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) is the 4, 5, or 6 train to Brooklyn Bridge.  Walk up Centre Street to Foley Square and look for Pearl Street, which is in between the two large federal courthouses on Foley Square. Walk down Pearl Street one block to where it dead ends on Park Row.  The vigil takes place on the corner across from the entrance to the MCC.
