Eight years ago this Monday, the Guantánamo Bay Detention Center opened its doors to a dark chapter in American history under the Bush administration - one marked by torture, inhuman conditions, war crimes and violations of international laws and the laws enshrined in the U.S. Constitution. Though there have been victories in the fight for justice, both the Obama administration's actions and inactions in its first year in office make it clear that much work remains. Join CCR and Witness Against Torture in Washington, D.C. this Monday, January 11, 2010 for a demonstration at the White House, a procession and a briefing at the National Press Club that will include CCR's Executive Director Vince Warren, Guantánamo attorneys and the voices of detainees and their families.

Only weeks after the announcement that the one-year deadline to close Guantánamo would be missed, the White House said it does not think it is "a good idea" to send the men they cleared for release to Yemen because of the fear-mongering of a few. Also this week, the D.C. Circuit made an appalling decision in Al Bihani v. Obama, ruling that indefinite detention can continue without regard to international law including the Geneva Conventions and even the laws of war. Join us in demanding that President Obama make good on his pledge to close the prison and reject indefinite detention of prisoners without charge or trial in the U.S.
