January 11 International Day of Action to Shut Down Guantanamo

Date

Add to My Calendar Friday, January 11, 2008 12:00am

Location

Friday, January 11, 2008 marks six years since the arrival of the first detainees at the U.S. Naval Base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Today, the detention camp remains a monumental symbol of torture, abuse of executive power and disregard for the rule of law. Hundreds of detainees remain imprisoned, and not one detainee has had a real hearing before a fair judge despite the Supreme Court’s decision in 2004 that they had the right to exactly that, in the Center for Constitutional Rights’ case Rasul v. Bush.

On January 11, protests will take place around the country marking the sixth anniversary of the opening of the detention camp at Guantanamo. Six years later, join us to protest and demand that the United States move beyond Guantanamo, beyond torture, and beyond the impunity of the Bush administration and the executive branch.

In Washington, DC, the Center for Constitutional Rights has teamed up with Witness Against Torture, Amnesty International and the National Religious Campaign against Torture to hold a permitted demonstration at 11:00 AM on the National Mall. (Gather at 12th St. NW between Madison Drive NW and Jefferson Drive SW – near the Smithsonian Metro Stop.) Join us to protest to shut down Guantanamo! Wear orange!

In New York City, the New York Metro Religious Campaign against Torture is holding an anti-torture vigil in Foley Square from 1 PM to 2 PM, marking the 6th anniversary of the arrival of the first detainees brought to Guantanamo Bay.

In Montclair, NJ, from 3:30pm until 5:00pm at the corner of South Fullerton and Bloomfield Avenue
, members of the Montclair Peace Vigil will join with thousands of people around the world to demand an end to torture and the indefinite, illegal, and immoral detention of men and boys at U.S. Naval Base at Guantánamo.

Around the country, the Center for Constitutional Rights supports Witness Against Torture’s International Day to Shut Down Guantanamo.
Actions will take place internationally, in well over 40 cities, from Seattle to Chicago to Dallas to Boston - see if your city is listed!
