From the stylings of Grand Master Flash to Public Enemy, Hip Hop has a long tradition of being used as a form a political speech and resistance. On Thursday August 21st the Bertha Justice Institute at the Center for Constitutional Rights invites you to join us for an exclusive screening of the award-winning documentary Slingshot Hip Hop .  Experience the story of a group of young Palestinians living in the Occupied Territories (Gaza, the West Bank, Jerusalem) and Israel, employing that tradition to traverse the cultural and political barriers that marginalize and divide them. This Month’s Flick: Produced in 2008 and directed by Jackie Reem Salloum, Singshot Hip Hop spotlights the Palestinian Hip Hop movement and its use of music and media to breakdown physical, social and geographical walls. The film highlights the geopolitical history of the region, reveals the difficult conditions facing many Palestinians living within Israel and under Israeli occupation, and offers a platform through Hip Hop expression for forging identity, fermenting resistance and building common ground in the face of political upheaval. From internal checkpoints and Separation Walls to gender norms and generational differences, this is the story of young people crossing the borders that separate them.  Check out the trailer.
