The Bertha Justice Institute at the Center for Constitutional Rights is pleased to announce the launch of a monthly film series that harnesses the power of film to educate, inspire, and tell the defining stories of political and social unrest, past and present, that shape the world in which we live. Each month CCR hand-picks a new cutting-edge documentary. Screenings are free, and before each film you’ll have the opportunity to have a drink and mingle with a diverse mix of artists, lawyers, activists and filmmakers at a cool venue in the city. We want to hear from you, so after each screening, there will be a brief dialogue to share impressions on the film and discuss how we can work together to shape a better world.

The FF team invites you to our series launch with a screening of the award-winning documentary: Freedom Summer 1964. Written and directed by Stanley Nelson, Freedom Summer tells the arresting tale of student-activists and Mississippi Delta residents who, in the summer of 1964, united to break the yoke of white supremacy that systematically denied Mississippi’s black vote. We chose this film on the 50th anniversary of Freedom Summer to reflect that historical struggle for freedom and to challenge us to think about what freedom looks like in 2014.
