When you write to Rep. John Conyers and the House Judiciary Committee to call for the impeachment of Jay Bybee, the torture architect, your name will be added to the following petition:
We, the undersigned, believe that Jay Bybee must be impeached from the federal bench for his High Crimes and Misdemeanors in conspiring to provide legal justification and cover for the Bush administration Torture Program, in violation of U.S. and international law and the U.S. Constitution. Further, he and the other high-level officials who conspired to create, approve, justify and execute the program must be prosecuted for breaking the law and committing war crimes.
Jay Bybee, the former head of the Office of Legal Counsel and today a federal judge on the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, was the principal author of a legal memo that attempted to justify waterboarding and other torture, laying out with chilling detail the methods to be used in torturing CIA prisoners.
Bybee’s flagrant contempt for the rule of law is utterly inconsistent with his judicial position and speaks directly to his competency to function in that office.
The New York Times called for Bybee’s impeachment in its staff editorial on Sunday, April 19, 2009. We, the undersigned, agree. The Judiciary Committee must act swiftly to hold a hearing that will determine grounds for impeachment and begin the process of holding all those responsible for torture accountable.
