CCR Legal Worker Ian Head will moderate a panel at the National Lawyers Guild Convention on October 12th in Pasadena California.

New COINTELPRO: How the NLG is Responding to the Targeting of Muslim Communities and Palestinian Human Rights Activists in the United States

This panel will convene attorneys from the NLG-NYC Muslim Defense Project and attorneys and legal workers from around the U.S. who are working to defend Muslim communities and Palestinian human rights activists. Panelists will discuss the surveillance, repression, infiltration, entrapment, and predatory policing of Muslim communities and Palestinian human rights activists in their regions and how they have supported these communities in pushing back against the FBI and local law enforcement agencies. Members of the NLG-NYC Muslim Defense Project will provide information on its work with the NYC metropolitan area Muslim community and how Guild chapters can replicate its structure

Ian Head is a legal worker with the Government Misconduct and Racial Justice docket at the Center for Constitutional Rights, Co-Executive Vice President of the NLG and a member of the NYC-NLG Muslim Defense Project.

Panelists

Beena Ahmad, Esq. is a member of the NLG-NYC’s Muslim Defense Project. A ’10 graduate of CUNY School of Law, she was a member of CUNY’s inaugural year of the Creating Law Enforcement Accountability and Responsibility (CLEAR) project, and a graduate of the Defenders Clinic. She currently works with the labor law firm of O’Dwyer & Bernstien.

Bina Ahmad, Esq. is a social justice attorney focusing on human and animal rights, and a member of the NLG-NYC’s Executive Committee, Muslim Defense Project and TUPOCC, and a 2012 NLG-NYC Spring Fling Honoree. She has worked with PETA, Farm Sanctuary, Al-Haq, Al-Awda, Human Rights Watch, Center for Constitutional Rights and Badil. Currently she is a legal clerk for the Russell Tribunal on Palestine.

Fahd Ahmed, Esq. is a community-based organizer, activist, and attorney. He is the Legal Director of DRUM (Desis Rising Up and Moving) and a graduate of CUNY School of Law. He has been a Haywood Burns Fellow, Ella Baker intern at the Center for Constitutional Rights, and a lecturer at the College of Ethnic Studies at San Francisco State University.

Lamis Deek, Esq. works against government repression, racial profiling, religious discrimination, and First Amendment suppression of radicalized political communities, as well as Arab and Muslim communities. She is vice president of the NLG-NYC, a Council on American Islamic Relations New York board member, Al-Awda New York-The Palestine Right to Return Coalition co-chair, and a U.S. Palestinian Community Network co-convener.

Michael Deutsche, Esq. has been with the People’s Law Office in Chicago since 1970, representing political activists and victims of police and government civil rights violations. He is a past legal director of the Center for Constitutional Rights. In addition to litigating full time, he has taught a seminar on prisons and has published extensively in legal and popular journals.

Reem Salahi, Esq. is a civil rights attorney at Hadsell Stormer Richardson & Renick, and represents the “Irvine 11,” the Islamic Center of South Bay against the City of Lomita, Imane Boudlal in her harassment and religious accommodation case against Disney,and three Muslim plaintiffs on behalf of a putative class of Muslims unlawfully surveilled by the FBI in Southern California.
