The Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) is a non-profit legal and educational organization dedicated to advancing and protecting the rights guaranteed by the United States Constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Center grew out of the civil rights struggle in the South and is committed to the creative use of law as a positive force for social change. For over 40 years, CCR has fought segregation and racial profiling, made important contributions to the battle for abortion rights and the rights of victims of domestic violence, held oil companies and other corporations accountable for human rights abuses overseas, and led key challenges to the government's detention and interrogation policies in the wake of 9/11, at home, in Guantánamo, and throughout the world.
CCR is seeking a full-time Education and Outreach Associate to coordinate all education and outreach aspects of CCR’s Government Misconduct & Racial Justice (GM/RJ) work, which is comprised primarily of cases and projects involving racial profiling, mass incarceration, the criminalization of dissent, police misconduct, immigrants’ rights, job discrimination, and other issues related to racial, social and economic rights. Examples include CCR’s police transparency and accountability project, the prison telephone justice project, the co-coordination of the Coalition to Abolish the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act (AETA), immigrants’ rights advocacy, and various racial and economic justice community support work in New Orleans.
· Initiate, develop and implement strategies for non-litigation advocacy and public education regarding GM/RJ legal work
· Maintain and develop relationships and alliances with national and local grassroots, community, faith-based and other activist organizations to support movements for social justice and human rights
· Work with GM/RJ legal team on legislative initiatives
· Draft and coordinate production of GM/RJ public education materials, including fact sheets, reports, and analyses of pertinent legislation
· Conduct policy research and analysis of findings
· Draft action alerts and other web-related advocacy materials
· Coordinate with GM/RJ legal team on all educational and political forums, including speaking engagements, conferences, panels, and CLE’s
· Some administrative duties as assigned
· Excellent written and public speaking skills required
· 3-5 years of social justice advocacy experience, preferably in the areas of racial, social or economic rights
· Experience in campaign organizing with coalitions and grassroots and community-based organizations
· Familiarity with federal and local law enforcement tactics in communities of color highly desired
· Ability to efficiently manage multiple tasks and priorities
· Computer literacy required and familiarity with web-based advocacy, including social networking strategies extremely helpful
· Multilingual ability a plus
· Ability to travel
· Strong sense of integrity and sense of humor
The salary range for this position is commensurate with experience and in accordance with CCR’s collectively bargained salary scale. Benefits include pension plan, escalating vacation beginning with three weeks, sick leave, holidays, and 100 percent organization paid health benefits for employees including medical, dental, life and long-term disability insurance.
